On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court  legalized gay marriage nationwide. In a 5-4 vote, the highest court in the land, decreed that all individuals can marry who they want no matter the gender or sexual orientation. Prior to the Supreme Court decision, 13 states had banned gay unions completely. This decision is a historic win for gay rights activists and for historians worldwide.
